The Challenge
A team of supporters of MSDP will be travelling (virtually) the distance from the most northerly Deaf club in the Shetland Isles to the most southerly Deaf club in St Helier, Jersey, via Liverpool Deaf club of course. This will see us travelling a total distance of 1,583km. 555km will be by sea and 1,028 by land.
We will not physically be travelling from point A to point B but instead completing the equivalent distances on treadmills, rowing machines, swimming in the pool, walking, running and riding bikes.
The inspiration behind the challenge has come from the fact that we had signed up for Tough Mudder back in January and were really disappointed at the end of June when they cancelled our event after we had spent almost 6 months mentally and physically preparing for the event. Once we had realised we could not transfer to a different Tough Mudder event this year due to other commitments, we decided to come up with a different challenge and it was agreed that the virtual challenge of travelling the equivalent distance between the three Deaf clubs was a challenge that has not been done before.
When does the challenge take place?
The challenge will start on Thursday 1st August and we aim to complete it by Monday 30th September. We will be closely tracking our combined distance on the Strava app and will keep our supporters updated!
Who is taking part?
There are 11 of us altogether - including MSDP staff, local freelance interpreters, Deaf community members and a volunteer.
What we are raising money for?
- To support the families of Deaf people with access to British Sign Language courses. We understand that not everyone can afford to pay for a course, but would love to learn to be able to communicate better with their families. This could be for BSL Level 1 or BSL Level 2.
- Funeral Interpreters. We would like to ensure that our community members get full access to a funeral service when a member of their family passes away, via a BSL Interpreter. This is an existing pot which is running really low, so to continue this service, we really need your help to build the pot again.
All donations are welcome, no matter how big or small, we really do appreciate your help. We look forward to keeping you updated with our progress!
